Chemical spill MCA or monochloroacetic acid (MCA) -- chemical not confirmed.

Chloroacetic acid easily penetrates skin and mucous membranes and interferes with cellular energy production. Initial dermal exposure to high concentrations (e.g., 80% solution) may not appear very damaging at first, however systemic poisoning may present within hours. Exposure can be fatal if greater than 6% body surface area is exposed to chloroacetic acid.

MABAS Division 12 Box Alarm on Box #3014 for a structure fire at VIP Occasions.

TL1 on scene reports smoke showing from the north door -- heavy smoke showing from the building at 1:37 p.m.

E1 crew on arrival reports a one-story commercial occupancy with heavy smoke showing from the Side A. TL1 leading out with a crosslay.

BC1 requests police shut down York St.

E2 assigned to the rear of the building for heavy smoke at the rear as well.

E2 requests a Box Alarm by 1:44  p.m.

Two lines on the fire by 1:48 p.m.

Fire through the roof by about 2:15 p.m.

Three elevated streams (A, A-B, D) and two multi-versals Side A by 2:22 p.m.

Multi-versal at the A-D corner by 2:24 p.m.

Wind from the West about 15 mph blowing smoke across the C-Side attack firefighters.

Two multi-versals on the C-Side.

Exposure (2-story frame house) on the B-Side (north side).

Elevated master stream shut down on Side D, and apparently AFFF foam with third multi-versal added to tactics on Side A by 3:03 p.m. Three elevated streams (Side D shut down), three multi-versals Side A, and two multi-versals on Side C.

All streams shut down by 3:16 p.m. Apparently letting inside load burn, which is mostly toward the D-side (south side) away from the exposure on the B-side (north side).

Excellent live aerial coverage by ABC Chopper 7 HD for over 60 minutes, but helicopter apparently has to depart for fuel about 3:20 p.m. [ABC 7 CHICAGO REPORT WITH VIDEO]

Command report they will probably hold the fire at a 2nd Alarm.

Command reports the roof came in, crews still working on hot spots, and will be working for some time. Utilities are on scene on standby by 4:37 p.m.
